Hackney Singers is a vibrant, non-audition community choir based in East London, known for its inclusive ethos and musical excellence. Founded in 1973, the choir has grown to include around 150 members from Hackney and surrounding boroughs. Its guiding principle is that anyone can learn and perform music well, regardless of prior experience. The choir performs at least two major concerts each year, often collaborating with professional orchestras and soloists, led by Musical Director Dan Ludford-Thomas. Our repertoire spans classical works, contemporary pieces, and choral arrangements, offering members and audiences a rich musical experience. Hackney Singers has also been involved in high-profile events, such as representing the borough at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympics. Rehearsals are held weekly in Hackney, and the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive. Members are encouraged to develop their vocal skills while enjoying the camaraderie of group singing. The choir is committed to accessibility and community engagement, making it a cornerstone of Hackney’s cultural life.
The Hackney Singers has grown from strength to strength from its origins in 1973 as an evening class at Hackney Institute. Proudly cherishing its community roots, the choir – now 150-strong - puts on 3 or 4 concerts a year, often in Hackney venues, but also at the Royal Festival Hall! We are a non-audition choir, and love to hear from prospective new members.
