The Choir of St John’s, Upper Norwood, is a vibrant and dedicated ensemble at the heart of our church’s worship. Rooted in the Anglican choral tradition, our choir includes both volunteer and professional singers who perform to a high musical standard in a warm, supportive community. Since 1887, choral music has been central to worship at St John’s. We trace our musical heritage to the arrival of Revd Thomas Helmore, an expert in Gregorian chant and former Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal. Our musical life flourished with the installation of the Lewis Organ (1882) and the appointment of Alfred Eyre as the first Organist and Master of Music (1881). Today, this proud legacy continues under the direction of our current Director of Music, James Gough.
