We are a classical choral society of around 80 members, aiming to perform concerts of a high standard with professional soloists and instrumentalists. Our repertoire is varied - ranging from large choral works to shorter pieces of both sacred and secular music. Our Monday evening rehearsals are lively, musically stimulating and very rewarding. We are extremely fortunate in our Music Director, Sam Evans, and our accompanist, Paul Ayres. Sam was appointed MD in September 2022. As well as being a highly experienced choral director, he is a singer and soloist, having been a member of the Monteverdi Choir for over twenty years. Under Sam's inspirational leadership, we improve our vocal technique each week, gain new insights into the music and share our love of choral singing. Our brilliant and highly versatile accompanist, Paul, is also an award-winning composer and arranger. We give 4 concerts a year in local venues including Harrow School Speech Room and St Albans Church where we rehearse. Each summer we have an AwayDay - recently, in July 2024, we went to Cambridge and sang evensong in the Queens College Chapel. The choir has also undertaken foreign tours to various European countries. A new member recently commented that joining HCS was 'one of the best decisions I have ever made!'
Harrow Choral Society traces its roots back to 1937 and the formation of a choir in St Albans Church, North Harrow. Almost 90 years on, the choir continues to flourish and is proud to be one of the leading choral societies in North West London. Current membership is around 80 and we give 4 concerts a year usually in local venues, including Harrow School Speech Room. Our repertoire encompasses the whole spectrum of choral music and the programme for a typical season will include at least one major choral work as well as shorter pieces of both sacred and secular music. We always engage professional soloists and instrumentalists for our performances. Our weekly rehearsals with our MD, Sam Evans, and our accompanist, Paul Ayres, are lively and very rewarding. We laugh a lot and learn a lot! Our aim is to perform at the highest standard and our mission is to communicate our love of choral singing to audiences both in Harrow and further afield. Prospective members are very welcome to try us out on any Monday evening.
