We’re the leading independent UK chorus known for performing the very best in choral music since 1876. Directed by David Hill MBE, our mission is to inspire and connect people of all backgrounds with the magnificence and emotional power of choral music through our performances, recordings and community engagement projects. The Choir was formed in 1876 to undertake the first performance of Bach’s B Minor Mass in the United Kingdom. Since then the Choir has remained a beacon of excellence in the performance of great choral works of all periods, including more contemporary works. Entirely unpaid and independent, its 240 singing members give much of their free time to promote about five concerts each year with leading Soloists and Orchestras, usually in the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral. We also sing in several other concerts each year and have taken part in national events such as Royal Weddings, the 75th Anniversary D-Day celebrations and the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall. We regularly commission new music to support contemporary composers and broaden the choral repertoire, and have made many excellent recordings. We’ve been described by one critic as ‘Probably the finest independent Choir in the world’.
The Bach Choir was founded to sing the first UK performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor in 1876. In our 150-year history we have had only nine musical directors including Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Sir David Willcocks. The common thread throughout has been the passion and pursuit of excellence. Directed by David Hill MBE, our mission is to inspire and connect people of all backgrounds with the magnificence and emotional power of choral music through our performances, recordings and community projects.
